As a litigation firm, not many people are aware that Cronin Miller has a Mediation Centre – right in the heart of Surfers Paradise.
Following the pandemic, the firm identified the increased need on the Gold Coast for suitable space for all forms of alternative dispute resolution, including mediation, and during the lockdown Derek Cronin also became a Nationally Accredited Mediator, following additional post graduate studies at Bond University.
The Mediation Centre, which sits within the firm’s premises (at what is now known as the Cronin Miller Building) at 33 Elkhorn Avenue, Surfers Paradise, occupies approximately 150 square metres, and incorporates two separate boardrooms, a mediator’s room, separate breakout areas, and tea and coffee making facilities.
A general increase in the property market has also been said to be a contributing factor to the increase in the need for resolution of such company disputes, particularly as the parties to the dispute have greater access to equity that they may have in their homes for the purpose of funding an exit. But the space has also been used by those seeking a resolution of family law matters, estate litigation, general property disputes, and shareholder/director disputes.
While in the past mediations have been conducted in Brisbane, what we have been finding is that business directors are interested in avoiding the trip on the M1. In fact we now have quite a number of Brisbane based businesses who would rather make their way to the relatively peaceful environment of the Gold Coast, than make their way into the Brisbane CBD.
